In January 2024, our TFELTP team collaborated with ZAMEP to investigate a concerning surge in malaria cases in Zanzibar. Here’s how we contributed to the response:
- Comprehensive Investigations: Our team conducted desk reviews, health facility visits, and case investigations to understand the outbreak’s scope and impact.
- Entomological Investigations: We carried out entomological studies to assess the mosquito population and transmission dynamics contributing to the surge.
- Surveillance Data Analysis: By analyzing surveillance data, we identified key patterns that helped in tailoring the response efforts.
- Identified Risk Factors: We uncovered critical risk factors, including:
- Lack of Bed Nets: Insufficient access to bed nets significantly increased vulnerability to malaria.
- Absence of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS): Recent gaps in IRS contributed to higher transmission rates.
- High Outdoor Activity Engagement: Increased outdoor activities exposed residents to mosquito bites during peak transmission times.
- Communication Gaps: Our assessment revealed communication gaps between the surveillance/case investigation teams and the entomology teams, highlighting the need for improved coordination in future responses.
Through these efforts, we aim to strengthen malaria control measures and protect the health of our communities. Together, we can work towards a malaria-free future!
