OVERVIEW OF TFELTP PROGRAMS

The Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (TFELTP) is designed to equip health professionals with the skills necessary to manage and respond to public health challenges effectively. Our programs are tailored to meet the needs of health professionals at various stages of their careers, from frontline health workers to senior public health leaders.

TFELTP offers a comprehensive training approach that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical field experience. This blend of learning ensures that participants not only understand the principles of epidemiology and laboratory management but also gain hands-on experience in applying these principles in real-world settings. The program is structured into three key levels: Frontline, Intermediate, and Advanced, each serving a distinct purpose in building a robust public health workforce in Tanzania.

Training Levels

  • Frontline Program: This entry-level training is aimed at district-level health workers who are often the first responders to public health threats. The program focuses on fundamental skills in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and basic data analysis, empowering participants to identify and respond to public health issues within their communities effectively.

  • Intermediate Program: Designed for mid-level health professionals, the Intermediate Program builds on the foundational skills gained in the Frontline Program. It introduces more advanced concepts in epidemiology and laboratory management, preparing participants to take on more significant roles in public health operations and management.

  • Advanced Program: The most comprehensive of the three levels, the Advanced Program is targeted at senior health professionals who are expected to lead public health initiatives at the national and regional levels. This program includes in-depth training in epidemiology, laboratory management, research, and leadership, culminating in the completion of a thesis or bound volume based on extensive fieldwork.

Holistic Approach to Training

TFELTP’s training methodology emphasizes a holistic approach, integrating classroom instruction with extensive field placements. This ensures that participants are well-rounded in both theoretical understanding and practical application. The programs are also aligned with national and international public health priorities, ensuring that graduates are prepared to contribute effectively to both local and global health initiatives.

By participating in TFELTP, health professionals not only advance their careers but also become pivotal contributors to Tanzania’s public health system, driving improvements in disease surveillance, outbreak response, and health program management.
