FELTP

COMPETENCIES

The Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (TFELTP) is committed to equipping health professionals with a comprehensive set of competencies that are essential for effective public health practice. These competencies are developed and refined through a combination of theoretical instruction, practical fieldwork, and applied research, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to address public health challenges at various levels.

Epidemiologic Methods

Understanding and applying epidemiologic methods is central to all levels of TFELTP training. Participants learn to design, conduct, and analyze epidemiologic studies, including outbreak investigations and public health surveillance. This competency includes:

  • Study Design: Principles of designing epidemiologic studies, including cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Techniques for gathering and analyzing public health data to inform decision-making.
  • Interpretation of Results: Skills to interpret epidemiologic data and translate findings into actionable public health interventions.

Public Health Surveillance

Effective public health surveillance is critical for detecting and responding to health threats. TFELTP participants develop the ability to design, implement, and manage surveillance systems that monitor disease trends and detect outbreaks. This includes:

  • Surveillance System Design: Developing systems that effectively capture data on communicable and non-communicable diseases.
  • Data Management: Skills in managing large datasets, ensuring data quality, and using data to guide public health action.
  • Outbreak Detection and Response: Identifying early signs of outbreaks and initiating timely and effective response measures.

Laboratory Management and Biosafety

The laboratory management competency ensures that participants are equipped to oversee public health laboratories, focusing on quality control, biosafety, and the application of diagnostic techniques. This competency includes:

  • Laboratory Operations: Managing laboratory resources, staff, and workflows to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Biosafety: Implementing biosafety protocols to protect laboratory personnel and the public from exposure to infectious agents.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensuring that laboratory processes meet national and international standards for accuracy and reliability.

Communication and Leadership

Effective communication and leadership are essential for driving public health initiatives. TFELTP emphasizes the development of skills that enable participants to lead teams, communicate findings, and advocate for public health policies. This includes:

  • Leadership Development: Training in leadership principles, team management, and strategic planning.
  • Public Health Communication: Techniques for communicating public health information clearly and effectively to various audiences, including policymakers, the public, and the media.
  • Advocacy: Skills for advocating for public health priorities and influencing policy decisions.

Research Methodology

Research is a cornerstone of public health, and TFELTP ensures that participants are proficient in designing, conducting, and disseminating research. This competency includes:

  • Research Design: Formulating research questions, developing protocols, and selecting appropriate study designs.
  • Data Analysis: Advanced techniques for analyzing research data and interpreting the results.
  • Dissemination of Findings: Skills for writing scientific papers, presenting research findings at conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Biostatistics

Biostatistics is integral to the analysis and interpretation of public health data. TFELTP participants gain proficiency in statistical methods that are essential for conducting epidemiologic research and evaluating public health programs. This includes:

  • Descriptive Statistics: Summarizing and describing health data using measures of central tendency, variability, and graphical displays.
  • Inferential Statistics: Applying statistical tests to make inferences about populations based on sample data.
  • Statistical Software: Training in the use of statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata) for data analysis.

Building a Skilled Public Health Workforce

By mastering these competencies, TFELTP graduates are equipped to lead public health efforts at all levels of the health system. Whether they are working in the field, managing laboratories, conducting research, or shaping policy, these professionals are prepared to make a meaningful impact on public health in Tanzania and beyond.
