GOVERNANCE
The governance of the Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (TFELTP) is built on a foundation of strong leadership and strategic partnerships. Our governance structure ensures that the program is effectively managed, aligns with national health priorities, and benefits from the expertise of key stakeholders in public health.
Steering Committee
The TFELTP is guided by a Steering Committee composed of core members from leading national and international health organizations. This committee is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction of the program, ensuring its sustainability, and supporting its alignment with Tanzania’s public health goals.
Core Members:
- Ministry of Health (MoH): The MoH plays a central role in providing oversight and aligning TFELTP’s activities with national health policies and strategies.
- Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS): As a leading academic partner, MUHAS provides academic oversight and contributes to the training and research components of the program.
- National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR): NIMR contributes research expertise and supports the program’s emphasis on evidence-based public health interventions.
- World Health Organization (WHO): WHO offers guidance on global public health standards and best practices, ensuring TFELTP aligns with international health priorities.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): CDC provides technical expertise and supports the program’s curriculum development and fieldwork activities.
- African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET): AFENET facilitates regional collaboration and networking, strengthening the program’s impact across Africa.
- US Agency for International Development (USAID)/President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI): USAID/PMI provides funding and strategic support, particularly in areas related to malaria control and prevention.

Secretariat
The daily operations and management of the TFELTP are handled by the Secretariat, which is housed within the Epidemiology and Disease Control Section of the Ministry of Health. The Secretariat ensures the smooth implementation of the program’s activities, coordinates with partners, and monitors the program’s progress.
Key Responsibilities of the Secretariat:
- Coordinating training activities and field placements.
- Managing program logistics and administration.
- Liaising with academic and field supervisors.
- Monitoring and evaluating program outcomes.
- Ensuring compliance with national and international public health standards.
